You know that your baby is coming and it’s time to prepare for their arrival. But what exactly should you pack, and how can you fill your bag without blowing your baby budget? Here, we help answer these questions and offer a bit of advice on how to splurge without a surge of guilt.
Baby Basics
When you and your partner are planning to pack your bag, your first thought is probably what your baby needs. Fortunately, it’s a short list. You might want to start with a going home outfit and a couple of sleepers and onesies for the rest of your stay.
You will also need to ensure that your car seat is properly strapped into your vehicle. Also, contact your hospital ahead of time to find out if they will send you home with wipes and diapers (most hospitals do without extra cost) or if you need to bring these items also. In all honesty, the fewer things you can take with you, the better. You’ll have less to bring back home, and you won’t spend on things you don’t need.
For Dad
Dads are their partners’ best source of support throughout the birthing process. Make sure that you have a bag large enough to handle everyone’s must-haves. You should be in charge of giving your birthing plan, ID, and insurance information to the hospital, and you should have enough cash on hand for the vending machine and parking. A t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants, necessary toiletries, and an extra pillow are also needed.
For Mom
For mom, the list is a bit longer. A few must-haves include a nursing bra, lip balm, nursing pads, and socks. You may also want to bring your own labor and delivery gown. Look for something comfortable and that adheres to your hospital’s delivery recommendations. Just make sure to wash it in a mild detergent ahead of time to protect your baby’s sensitive skin.
A few niceties will help moms pass the time (and are lifesavers when you have a long labor). Include a wireless charger for your phone, healthy snacks, magazines or a handheld video game system, and a journal. If you plan to have photos taken at the hospital or shortly after your return home, do make a point to splurge on a new outfit so that you can feel beautiful and confident in your first family photos. A comfortable jumpsuit or super-soft nursing lounge dress are great options that can be worn many times after your photos. You can save some money on this indulgence — even when shopping at a high-end retailer — with coupons and promo codes that can help you save and get cash back.
Financially Sound
Most of the things you’re going to pack up are items you already own. But if you do find yourself pulling out the old checkbook, something you can do to keep more money in your account is to buy used. The vast majority of newborn items are used for days — or at most, weeks — and you can usually find a great deal on Facebook Marketplace or other secondhand retailers. Remember: Your baby doesn’t care about brands, so avoid the temptation to overspend on things like logos if you can get an equally effective alternative for less.
Your first days with your new baby do not have to be a drain on your account. Pack your bag ahead of time, and you won’t have to overspend at the hospital’s gift shop for necessities. A good rule of thumb: Less is more for baby, and the fewer things you bring, the less you’re likely to forget in the scramble to get your newborn home.
